The welcome reception will take place on in the Old Town Hall in Potsdam's historical center. Day: Sunday, August 19th
Address:
Tram/bus stop:
The Old Market Square (Alter Markt) is readily accessible from any place in town by public transportation. There are tram and bus stops just in front of it and it is within short walking distance from the main train station. Just ask at your hotel how to get to "Alter Markt". When you get there, just look around for the Nicolas Church and the City Hall next to it. If you arrive in Potsdam during the reception, you may go there directly since it is just across the river from Potsdam's train station. We will provide a place to store your luggage during reception. To get there, you can take a taxi, bus or tram departing next to the train station, or just walk across the bridge, 6-8 mins. If you walk, take the "Heinrich-Mann-Allee" exit from the train station building. Buses: 605, 606, 609, 612, 614, 631, 638
The "Alter Markt" bus stop is the first stop after train station. You should ask somebody whether a given bus or tram goes in the right direction since the train station is in the middle of the route for some of them. If you go to bus/tram or taxi, take the "Friedrich-Engels-Str" exit from the train station building. The Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) is located at the east side of the Old Market Square (Alter Markt) in the historical center of Potsdam. Left to it on the Old Market Square is the St. Nicolas Church (Nikolaikirche), a large squarish building with a huge dome built in 1837. The Old Town Hall was built even earlier, in 1755. It is easily recognized by and famous for its gold-coated Atlas bearing the world and overseeing the town from the tower. In the middle of the square, between Old City Hall and St. Nicolas Church on the photo, is the Fortuna Gate (Fortunaportal), recently reconstructed entrance gate to the City Palace (Stadtschloss), which was demolished in 60s by communist authorities. Next to the gate (behind it on the photo) is the Marble Obelisk (Marmorobelisk) erected in 1753 to accent its Roman character.
