Travel to Berlin and Potsdam

[bullet]Information about public transportation in Potsdam and Berlin

In alphabetical order.
Each leg of your trip is described separately.

AIR TRAVEL TO GERMANY

All major airlines and many smaller carriers, including discount carriers like EasyJet, RyanAir, GermanWings, BerlinAir, FlyTUI, offer air service to one of the three Berlin airports: Tegel, Schönefeld, or Tempelhof. They are all within 50 km radius from Potsdam and the conference site.

Thanks to a choice of discount connections to other European cities, it may be possible to save money by flying, for example, to London and then continuing on the discount carrier.

To get to Potsdam from either airport, you can take taxi, rent a car, or use public transportation.

BUS, TRAM, AND LOCAL TRAIN TIMETABLES

The Deutsche Bahn Travel Planning Service (see the links page) makes it easy to check connections and schedules of local public transportation (regional trains, city trains, trams, and buses) in Berlin and Potsdam.

DRIVING TO POTSDAM BY CAR

One way or the other, you need to get to the motorway A10 known as "Berliner Ring". Depending on from which direction you arrive, you take either exit "Potsdam Nord" or "Michendorf/Potsdam Süd" (cf. area map). When driving on A115, take exit "Potsdam Babelsberg". In either case, follow first signs to "Zentrum" that is downtown. Once in town, follow the hotel guide system (green signs) and/or instructions from your hotel. Check the links page for travel planners and for Potsdam city map.

DRIVING TO POTSDAM WITH CAR RENTED AT AN AIRPORT

If you rent a car at any airport, you need to get to A115 and follow it to exit "Potsdam-Babelsberg", then follow first signs to "Zentrum" that is downtown. Once in town, follow the hotel guide system (green signs) or instructions from your hotel. Check the links page for travel planners and for Potsdam city map. The rental agency staff can tell you the best way to A115.

Warning for those driving from Tegel: when turning off to A115 watch for markings on the street to check you are on the correct exit lane because the street signs are a bit misleading: the rightmost lane takes you only to the Intl Congress Center (ICC).

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FROM BERLIN TO POTSDAM

You can take either S-Bahn S7 (direction Potsdam) or regional train RE1 (direction Magdeburg) from Berlin to Potsdam main train station (Potsdam Hbf) or city station "Park Sanssouci" (not all trains stop there, though). You need to buy a single-trip ticket (Einzelfahrkarte) BERLIN ABC for 2.70 Euro. See the page about public transportation for further details.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FROM HOTEL TO CONFERENCE SITE

Public transportation information is included on the info page for your hotel (link "accommodations"). If your hotel is not listed there, ask how to get to bus stop "New Palace" (Haltestelle "Neues Palais") or check yourself online in DB Bahn Travel Planning Service (link "Potsdam, Berlin, and area links"). See the page about public transportation for further details.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FROM POTSDAM TRAIN STATION TO CONFERENCE SITE

Use the "Friedrich-Engels-Straße/Reisezentrum" exit to get to buses and taxis. The direction signs are overhead in the middle.

Take bus 605, 606, X5, or 695. They all begin their route on the station. Get out on the bus stop "Neues Palais". If you are coming from Berlin, you use the same ticket further. Otherwise, you need to buy a single-trip ticket (Einzelfahrkarte) POTSDAM AB for 1.70 Euro from the driver. See the page about public transportation for further details.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FROM POTSDAM TRAIN STATION TO HOTEL

From train station in Potsdam, you can take a regional train, bus, and/or tram to get to your hotel. A few hotels are within walking distance. The details are provided with the hotel info or you can use Deutsche Bahn Travel Service (see the links page) to find all possible connections. You can use the advanced search option to enter the actual street address and the program will even offer a map with walking instructions.

The main train station has three exits. Use the "Friedrich-Engels-Straße/Reisezentrum" exit to get to trams, buses, and taxis. The direction signs are overhead in the middle. "Reisezentrum" is, by the way, the rail service center at the station.

If you are coming from Berlin, you use the same ticket further. Otherwise, you need to buy a single-trip ticket (Einzelfahrkarte) POTSDAM AB for 1.70 Euro regardless which means of transportation you use. See the page about public transportation for further details.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FROM SCHÖNEFELD AIRPORT

Take a regional train (direction Potsdam Hauptbahnhof) to Potsdam Hbf, the main station in Potsdam. You need to buy a single-trip ticket (Einzelfahrkarte) BERLIN ABC for 2.70 Euro. See the page about public transportation for further details. From Potsdam main train station, you can continue with a taxi or public transportation.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FROM TEGEL AIRPORT

Take Bus X9 to Berlin station Zoologischer Garten. From there, take regional train RE1 (direction Magdeburg) or S-Bahn S7 to Potsdam-Hauptbahnhof. You need to buy a single-trip ticket (Einzelfahrkarte) BERLIN ABC for 2.70 Euro.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION FROM TEMPELHOF AIRPORT

Take underground U6 from "Platz der Luftbrücke" to "Berlin Friedrichstrasse". From there, take regional train RE1 (direction Magdeburg) or S-Bahn S7 to Potsdam-Hauptbahnhof. You need to buy a single-trip ticket (Einzelfahrkarte) BERLIN ABC for 2.70 Euro.

TAXI SERVICE FROM AIRPORTS

Airport taxicabs can take you directly to your hotel. The cost is from 35-40 Euro from Tegel to 45-50 Euro from Schönefeld, and the drive takes around 35 from Tegel and around 60 mins from Schönefeld or Tempelhof.

TAXI SERVICE FROM POTSDAM TRAIN STATION TO CONFERENCE SITE

Use the "Friedrich-Engels-Straße/Reisezentrum" exit to get to taxis. The direction signs are overhead in the middle. You find the taxi stand just outside to the left. Ask to go to New Palace (Neues Palais, pron. no-yes paleh). The ride should cost you 11-12 Euro.

TAXI SERVICE FROM POTSDAM TRAIN STATION TO HOTEL

Go to the "Friedrich-Engels-Straße/Reisezentrum" exit of the train station building. The taxi stand is just outside to the left. The ride to your hotel should be 7-17 Euro depending on the distance.

TRAIN TRAVEL TO BERLIN AND POTSDAM

Only a few intercity trains stop in Potsdam but Berlin has good train connections from all around Europe. Almost all intercity trains stop at the main train station in Berlin, Berlin Hbf, but you can also get off in Wannsee, Ostbahnhof, Lichtenberg, or Spandau depending from which direction you travel. From any station you take S-Bahn and/or regional train to get to Potsdam. You can use the Deutsche Bahn Travel Service (see the links page) to find your best connection. When buying your train ticket, ask to include city transportion for Berlin/Potsdam, so you don't need to buy local transportation tickets in Berlin.
